Whether we are aware of it or not, our lives are constantly being shaped by emerging design trends – colors and decors, textures and even gloss levels. Decorative surfaces are the way that we all subtly interact with these trends. We live, work and play in environments filled with vertical and horizontal surfaces and we intuitively respond to them without even noticing. SSI works hard to understand and interpret these surface trends, we collaborate with our partners both in Europe and around the world to make sure we bring our customers products and insights that are on the leading edge of the decorative surface trends. We search for the best designs and next generation finishes that are encompassed by both mega trends and more temporal cycles and are curated specifically for the North American market. SSI marries form and function in our forward leaning decorative surfaces collections.

When creating our look books, we offer insight into these surface trends, and look to simplify the accompanying design narratives so that the patterns and textures can be easily translated by our industry customers. Design trends for kitchen and baths (as an example) are highlighted, along with interpretations for the hospitality, healthcare, retail, commercial and educational industries.

Our lives are characterized by fundamental societal influences that are apparent but also unnoticed – incrementally affecting the way we live. These Mega Trends are over-arching universal movements – epochal and global – encompassing all demographics and are several decades in perspective, thus differentiating themselves from shorter term trends and fashion. However, the personalities and requirements of each demographic group is an influencing factor in the way each Mega Trend is fully expressed.

In addition, there is an overriding movement which is best described as FUSION. We are learning to take the best and most successful designs from multiple industries and fuse these elements together to create functionally overlapping spaces while synthesizing new experiences. We are living in a Venn diagram where our Work, Live and Play lives are intersecting (fueled by technology), and in this new decade it is exciting to trace the evolving outcomes.

While we can still see the short term trends in this Look Book, the fluidity of our society is encouraging a more individual expression of how we choose to live. We have identified 4 main Mega Trends and will explore how they are being interpreted by several important market sectors – Residential, Multifamily, Healthcare, Hospitality, Retail and Commercial – in this piece.

SSI has identified five key design trends that will be expressed in multiple markets and industries. We have curated the best colors, woodgrains and textures (including High Gloss and Super Matte) finishes all available as inspiration to create sophisticated design concepts with our advanced surfacing options. We address modern  design trends for the Kitchen and Bath and Multifamily industry, as well as interpretations for Healthcare, Hospitality, Store Fixture and Commercial interiors. Our five design trends include the Scandinavian Hygge movement, the Japanese Wabi Sabi lifestyle (encompassing Shou Sugi Ban), our Smart Connected lives and Modern Farmhouse and Industrial aesthetics.
